1.  What can I expect when I come to court?

Please see ďYour Day in CourtĒ brochure. Copies of the "Your Day in Court" are available at the Dumont Violations Bureau at Borough Hall or call 201-387-5032 to request a copy. 4.    How do I pay my ticket?

You may pay at the Dumont Violations Office with cash, check or money order.  You may pay online with a credit card at njmcdirect.com.

5.    What do I do if I lost my ticket?

Please call the Dumont Violations Office at 201-387-5032/5033 and give them your plate number or driverís license information.

6.    How do I get a public defender?

In order to get a public defender you must come to court and complete a Financial Questionnaire to Establish Indigency-Municipal Court Form (Please click on the below link for a copy of the form).  The judge will review the completed form.  The judge will grant his approval if you are eligible and advise you what you must pay for the services of the public defender.  The maximum amount charged for a public defender is $200.

7.    Where can I get legal advice if I am not eligible for a Public Defender?

8.    What do I do if I cannot appear at court on the date scheduled?

9.    If the judge suspends my Driverís License may I get a special license to drive to and from work?

No, temporary driverís licenses are not issued in the State of New Jersey for this purpose.

10.    What do I do if I do not have money to pay my fines on court night?

Full payment is expected on court night.  If you do not have the money to pay all your fines you must complete the Financial Questionnaire to Establish Indigency-Municipal Court Form.  The judge will review the form and determine whether or not you are eligible for a Time Payment Plan.

11.    The motor vehicle violation on my ticket is not listed on the back of the ticket. What should I do?

12.    What happens if I fail to pay my ticket or fines?

If you fail to pay your fines/tickets your driverís license may be suspended or a warrant may be issued.

13.    How do I get a copy of my driverís abstract?

You may contact the N.J. Dept. of Motor Vehicles at 609-292-7500 or go on line at www.state.nj.us/mvc/Licenses/DriverHistory.htm.

14.    My driverís license is suspended.  How do I get it restored?

You must make certain all fines with all courts are paid in full. Then you must contact the N.J. Dept. of Motor Vehicles at 609-292-7500.

15.    How do I file an Appeal?

Appeals must be filed within 20 days after the entry of judgment with the Superior Court.  A check for $400 payable to Tape Reporters must be given to the court administrator for the transcript. A filing fee of $75 payable to the State of N.J. Judiciary is submitted along with the Notice of Appeal to the Criminal Division Manager.

If you are unable to pay for filing an appeal, ask the court staff at either the municipal or superior court how to apply for the waiver of the filing fee.
